Presented off-site in verdant gardens and intimate cottage spaces, the exhibition features sculpture, painting, ceramic, textile, video, and sound works that celebrate slow, curious relationships with the land and with each other. This third annual group exhibition for the summer solstice calls attention to acts of personal and collective reorientation and recovery, with artworks and public programs that position yearning and abstract storytelling as critical compasses for belonging.

Join us Saturday, July 18th at 2:00 pm for workshop with artist Max Trumpower who shares knowledge and practical guidance on figurative vessel-building and at-home “glaze.” Max teaches the basics of collecting soil for surface treatment in ceramic sculpture work and demonstrates how to create textured surfaces with the collected soil samples. This COMPANION Assembly is a program of Coordinates of Belonging, the 2026 summer solstice.

Beginning with an artist talk, Max will show-and-tell accessible options for making found slips or clay, pinch pots, ancient glazes, oxides, and stains. Participants will learn the basics of collecting soil for surface treatment on sculpture work. Max will demonstrate tips for making textured surfaces using collected soil samples, along with providing a tutorial on creating figures that also function as a vessel for holding liquids or objects. This workshop is designed for artists, sculptors, ceramicists, and anyone interested in alternative ceramic processes.

Join us Saturday, July 11th at 1:00 pm for a half-day workshop with artist Aleyah Austin, exploring the camera-less photographic technique of lumen printing through the shapes and silhouettes of native plants. This COMPANION Assembly is a program of Coordinates of Belonging, the 2026 summer solstice.

Beginning with a guided garden walk, together we will collect foliage, light, and shadow to create lumen prints under the sun. Participants will leave with multiple 8 x 10 and 11 × 14 inch lumen prints and have the option to keep their wooden ware board + glass + clamps set-up so they can continue making photograms after the workshop. This workshop is designed for artists, gardeners, photographers, educators, and anyone interested in botany and alternative photographic processes.

Co-hosted by Braydee Euliss and Lauren Day, this collaborative community WriteShop offers artists a guided, low-intensity opportunity to think and write about their own work. Participants will learn more about the essential texts that support an art practice and respond to simple prompts in writing. The group will be invited to share and reflect with each other before making final revisions and arriving at newly developed or updated artist statements.

Join us Saturday, June 27th at 1:30 pm for a conversation about the American Chestnut with James R. McKenna, founder of A Breed Above Timber and current Chief Science Officer for the Indiana American Chestnut Foundation. This Assembly is a program of our annual summer solstice exhibition, Coordinates of Belonging.

What was the American chestnut, and why bring it back?

A summary of the historic and ecological value of the American chestnut tree, its demise through an invasive exotic pathogen, and the work over decades to develop chestnut blight resistance provided by James R. McKenna. Jim will conclude his talk with a tour of the chestnut planting in the White River Farm orchard, which includes pure Americans, Chinese, and hybrids. Attendees will learn how to identify each type of chestnut, and examples of grafting, nut collection, and cracking will be demonstrated. Examples of American chestnut wood will be on display.

Join land-based artist and researcher Shamira, soil health specialist Kevin Allison, and cultural practitioner Dr. Danicia Monét Malone for an intimate half-day residency exploring Indiana soil as both ecological record and artistic material. Held during opening weekend for Coordinates of Belonging, the 2026 summer solstice annual group exhibition.

Beginning with a guided conversation on the soils of Indiana, participants will learn how land conditions, agriculture, ecology, and human stewardship shape the ground beneath us. From there, the group will move into a hands-on pigment-making session, transforming locally sourced soils into watercolor pigments through traditional grinding and preparation processes.

Throughout the residency, tea and seasonal refreshments will be shared as part of the slower, somatic approach to learning, observation, and material engagement.

Participants will leave with handmade earth pigments, works on paper, and a take-home material kit for continued experimentation and study.

This residency is designed for artists, gardeners, educators, environmental thinkers, and anyone interested in deepening their relationship to land through making.

Join us Sunday, June 1, 2025 1—4 pm for a musical and meditative afternoon with STEP. STEP. STEP. artists Landon Caldwell and Rebekah Nolan.

STEP. STEP. STEP. is a storybook and exhibition by Rebekah Nolan. The exhibition presents three room-sized installations, each with an accompanying sound composition, under the creative direction of Nolan. She shares 200+ new, acrylic and oil pastel drawings and paintings, each a variation on a theme. An otherwise ignored portion of the gallery is activated with a conjuring graphite and found object collaboration by Danielle Joy Graves and Nick Witten. In her largest textile work to date, Priya Wittman contributes an embracing and monumental tulle installation.

Landon Caldwell composed generative, site-relational sound works distinct to each installation. The looped compositions play continuously and concurrently, fading in and out of each other as viewers move between the galleries. Audio includes field recordings of Nolan walking and white noise.

Landon will open our Sunday afternoon performing new pieces live with us in the front gallery. Following his set, Rebekah will lead a walking meditation that leaves from the gallery around 2:15 and moves through the neighborhood for roughly 45 minutes before returning. If you’re walking with us, wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle. We’ll likely walk rain or shine, so be mindful of the day’s weather.

Join us for a morning with Rebekah Nolan at Golden Hour Books as she reads STEP. STEP. STEP., a new storybook written and illustrated by the Indy-based artist. STEP. STEP. STEP. moves readers through the daily walks of an artist and the familiar and unknown encounters along the way.

Following the reading, guests with children are invited to a private viewing of Nolan's concurrent exhibition at COMPANION, also titled STEP. STEP. STEP. The exhibition explores the book’s visuals and theme through new drawings, new sounds, and new installations created in collaboration with artists Landon Caldwell, Danielle Joy Graves, Nick Witten, and Priya Wittman.
