COORDINATES OF BELONGING

Summer Solstice 2026
COORDINATES OF BELONGING

June 20 — July 19, 2026
an off-site group exhibition for the summer solstice

COMPANION presents Coordinates of Belonging, an exhibition for the 2026 summer solstice featuring a group of artists and land-based practitioners who share bodies of knowledge celebrating slow, curious relationships with land, with spacetime, and with each other.

Aleyah Austin, Stephanie Barlow, Kim Beck, Stuart Hyatt, Meris Drew, Ellery Diaz, Lalana Fedorschak, Dana Lynn Harper, Maura Jasper, James R. McKenna, Chris Merritt, Rebekah Nolan, Shamira, Kevin Allison, Danicia Monét Malone, Max Trumpower, and Seneca Weintraut.

Presented off-site in verdant gardens and intimate cottage spaces, the exhibition features sculpture, painting, ceramic, textile, video, and sound works. This third annual exhibition for the summer solstice calls attention to acts of personal and collective reorientation and recovery, with artworks and public programs that position yearning and abstract storytelling as critical compasses for belonging. The residential setting is stewarded by neighbors who have transformed the cottage, grounds, and remaining farmstead into an artists and writers residency.

White River Farm is a beloved multi-generational family

property and former farmstead along the White River

in Indianapolis. Before it became a neighborhood, the

land was a late-19th-century country estate supported

by a 400-acre working farm. Along with a farm, the landscape

includes a meadow, ravines, a pond, and orchards.

The original landscape was designed by renowned Danish-

American landscape architect Jens Jensen in the 1920s.

Landscape architects Merritt Chase revisited these plans in

the 2020s, with a focus on preserving the property’s historic

character and honoring the legacy of the landscape while

enhancing the environmental stewardship of the property.

Today, the site is stewarded by neighbors who have worked with Merritt

Chase to preserve and reinvigorate the landscape and with

El Dorado Architects to transform the cottage, grounds,

and remaining farmstead into an artists and writers

residency. The goals of this work include enhanced

adaptation for climate change, increased ecological

health, and sensitive integration of new social and cultural

creative programming.

The property is home to Thick Time Residency, which

offers by invitation space and time to artists, curators,

writers, architects, and creatives of many kinds.

The first publication by COMPANION supports the third summer solstice exhibition Coordinates of Belonging as a physical archive of the featured 17 artists and land-based practitioners and their contributions to the gallery’s month-long residency at White River Farm. Sculpture, ceramic, textile, painting, video, and sound works are presented in verdant gardens and intimate residential spaces once home to a functional farmstead, redesigned by Danish-American landscape architect Jens Jensen in the 1920s, and currently under new stewardship as an artist and writers residency.

Designed by Commercial Artisan, the catalog collects the pieces of the exhibition into a simple, but elegant package bound together by a prong fastener.
